A Warning? More Like a Promise!

Remember...

Is
Coming!

Ash Wednesday is February 18, 2015

(Yeah, I know.  Sounds like something from A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series upon which is based the HBO series Game of Thrones.  I’m a fantasy genre geek!)

Keep On Keepin' On ...

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. - Romans 12:12

No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities.  Always see them, for they are always there. ~ Norman Vincent Peale

A Humbling Lesson...

The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” ~ Matthew 25:40.

The same citation twice in the same week...And I didn't plan it.  Could there be a theme building?

This is a painful tale for me to recount, because it reminds me of just how imperfect I am, how often I still fail to live the Christian life to which I profess.  It takes me down a peg or two, or 50.

Earlier this week I was in the City (The Big Apple, in case you were wondering) for a job interview.  The position is in the development (fundraising) department of a wonderful nonprofit that works to turn around the lives of homeless men and women - what I once heard referred to as The Invisible New Yorkers (Noo Yawkuhs, if you prefer to use my Bronx accent).  Homelessness and hunger are causes that I have been committed to since I was a very young man.

"This could be a great fit," I thought to myself as I made my way downtown to the organizations' SOHO offices.  Outside the building I stopped to check my iPhone to ensure that I had arrived at the correct address.  While standing there a homeless man approached me, with a beautiful smile, asking for some money.

I smiled back and turned him away with, "Sorry, man.  I've been out of work since June.  I haven't got a thing.  But I will pray for you."

"Thanks," he replied.  "I'll pray for you, too.  Good luck."

"Thank you!"

I continued on to what I felt was a very good interview.

Last night I had a dream.

I was back on the corner of Broadway and West Houston Street and that same homeless gentleman approached me again, with that amazing smile.  Gently, he reminded me of the $2.25 in my left trouser pocket, the sandwich I had made for my lunch that was in my right coat pocket and the trail mix bar in the other coat pocket.

Huh?!  How could this guy know what was or wasn't in my pockets?

He quoted, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Then he hugged me and shuffled away.

God, how could I have missed you?!

He was not a chiding me, although He could (should) have.  He was not angry with me, even though I had failed to serve this, one of His children in need.  It was simply a loving and gentle reminder from Him that I did have something to share with this man.  Something more that I had failed to acknowledge.

I arrived home with that $2.25 still in my pocket.  Did I really need it?

It is not always important for me to try to help all the homeless, to solve each of Society's ills.  All I need do is help just one of my brothers or sisters.

I will try to keep this lesson in mind, no in my heart, the next time God comes up to me on the street, or in the A&P parking lot, or in the fellowship hall of my church and asks me for help.

I Made You...

Matthew 24:40

I used to work for Covenant House, the largest provider of shelter and support services for homeless and runaway youth in the country.  I often heard our president, Sr. Mary Rose McGeady, share the quote below.  Consider it not an indictment, but an exhortation.

A call to action.

An encouraging to share.

A challenge to make a difference.  If even for just one person, one child made in God's image.

It stirs me still, especially during those times when I feel overwhelmed by the inequalities, the inconsistencies and the inadequacies of this world.

"On the street I saw a small girl
cold and shivering wearing a thin dress,
with little hope of a
decent meal.
I became angry and said to God,
"Why did you permit this?
Why don't you do something
about it?"
For a while God said nothing.
That night he replied
suddenly:
"I certainly did something
about it.
I made you."

Let Jesus Lighten Your Load By Rick Warren ~ January 7, 2015

Not so long ago, I shared a meditation from one of my spiritual "guides", the late Henry Nouwen.  Today, I re-post from another of my faith heroes, Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and founder/senior pastor of Saddleback Church.  I read The Purpose Driven Life just as I was about to turn 50.

It transformed me.

I am fairly certain that you would not be reading this blog (by the way, thanks for that) had I never picked up Rick's book.  It took a few years and tons of prayer, but eventually I added this blog to my Faith Journey.  The meditation I share below offered tremendous comfort to me this week just ended.  I am still out of work, my unemployment benefits have dried up and money is scarce.  But, Rick's message reminded me that there is One to whom I can come, any time, for solace and succor.  One who shares my pain, my fears, my despair.

Even my anger and frustration.

I pray Rick's words comfort you, as well.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

I don’t know what burden you’re carrying. I don’t know what’s weighing you down. But I do know the answer.

Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 RSV).

For many years I never understood that verse, because I didn’t know what a yoke was. When Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you,” it sounded to me like he was going to give me something else to deal with. I’ve got a heavy enough burden, Lord. I don’t need to take your problems on me.
A yoke is actually a board that has two arches in it that you put over two cattle so they can pull a cart.

The value of a yoke is that it halves the load. Without a yoke, one cow’s got to pull that entire load by itself. But if you yoke up the cow with another cow, then the two cows pull the load together, and the load is half as heavy.

When Jesus says to take his yoke upon you, he’s not saying he’s going to give you his problems. Jesus doesn’t have any problems! He’s saying he’s going to share your problem. He’s going to share your load. He’s going to take your stress on himself and bear it with you.

Wow!

He says three verbs in this verse: come, learn, and take. Jesus says, “Come to me. Team up with me. Then, learn how I do it. Take on a lighter load. This is going to reduce your stress. This is going to make it easier for you to navigate.”

When you’re yoked with Christ, you move together with him. You move in the same direction and at the same speed. And, you move in the right direction and at the right speed.

Talk It Over

  • Why is it sometimes difficult to accept help from someone who wants to share your burdens and make it easier on you?
  • Do you have people in your life who are willing to do that for you? How are you offering yourself to others to help reduce their stress?
  • God already knows all about your stress. How will you show him that you are ready to take on his yoke?

Faith Further Defined...

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.  Martin Luther

If someone asked me the question, "What is faith?", I would point them to this quote by the man who turned the Catholic Church on its ear.

And changed everything.

January Thaw

Even during the darkest, loneliest times hope shines through in the simplest of things.

Like a "baby" pine cone nurtured by an early winter rain.  Waiting to grow into its role as a source of new life.

Let our faith be such as this: quietly, constantly, consistently sustained by Hope, by Faith, by Love and perseverance.

Happy New Year!

May 2015 be abundant with blessings for you and your loved ones.
